Frequently Asked Questions

Helpspace is an innovative therapy platform designed to connect individuals seeking psychotherapy with qualified, registered and accredited therapists in the U.K.

Our mission is to make it easy to find the type of therapist that is right for your specific needs.

To identify the type of therapist for you, simply take the anonymous Helpspace questionnaire.

The therapists on Helpspace are fully qualified, registered/accredited professionals trained in the U.K., each with their own areas of expertise and therapeutic approach. All therapists are insured to practice privately.

Helpspace seeks to align itself with therapists that have demonstrated their commitment to a high standard of care.

Helpspace therapists are rigorously vetted to ensure they meet high standards of qualification and experience, ensuring you receive quality support tailored to your needs.

At Helpspace, we are committed to connecting you with high-quality, professional therapists. To achieve this, we have a thorough screening process in place. This verification process includes:

  • Confirming membership with relevant professional bodies, ensuring therapists adhere to high professional standards.
  • Verifying appropriate qualifications by reviewing certificates and documentation.
  • Checking for professional insurance, which is essential for safeguarding both therapists and clients.

Therapists are ethically obliged to respect your privacy.

Your therapist may discuss your case with their supervisor - another therapist that is also ethically obliged to respect your privacy. Supervision is a standard practice in the therapy profession in the UK.

The only other exception is if you share that you intend to hurt yourself or another person, or have committed a serious crime.

Helpspace counsellors are registered with Professional Bodies (such as the BACP) which require members to subscribe to a code of ethics. This includes protecting your privacy as a client.

You can communicate with your Helpspace therapist via our built-in Video Call system. You therapist may also offer sessions over the phone, or in person.

Every Helpspace appointment has a dedicated Video Call meeting link.

Simply click the Video Call link for the appointment in question when it's time for your session. This opens a Video Meeting with your therapist.

You will find a button or link to open the Video Call with your therapist:

  • In your Helpspace account, under 'My Counselling Sessions'.
  • In your confirmation email for the appointment.
  • In the reminder email sent on the day of the appointment.

If you prefer, you can also speak with your therapist over the phone. You can choose the delivery-format (e.g. phone) at booking. Remember to check with your telephone service provider about any call costs.

If you opted for an in-person session, you can meet your therapist at their practice (the exact address will appear in your Helpspace account on the My Counselling Sessions page, and you can also find the address in the Confirmation and Reminder emails).

Helpspace is a pay-as-you-go service. There is no lock-in, and there is no subscription.

Each therapist sets their own fees based on factors such as experience, specialisations, and the type of therapy provided.

Prices vary to accommodate a broad spectrum of needs and budgets, ensuring that you can find a therapist within your price range.

Helpspace offers filters that allow you to find a therapist within your budget.

Helpspace is designed to support individuals and couples looking for support with a range of psychological challenges, such as: anxiety , relationship issues, self-esteem concerns, conflict, grief, addictions, sleeping, low mood, to name but a few.

Our platform can connect you with therapists who specialise in your area of concern.

Helpspace therapists can support you with a wide variety of challenges you may be facing. Our mission is to make it easy to connect with a practitioner that fits your specific needs.

However, it's important to know that Helpspace (and online therapy in general) is not suitable for everyone. Helpspace is not the right option for you if:

  • You are experiencing an urgent crisis or an emergency, or if you are at risk of suicide, in which case contact your G.P. or the Samaritans immediately on 116 123. Call 111 if you urgently need medical help or advice.
  • If you are suffering from a severe or serious mental health condition (such as schizophrenia), in which case in-person therapy with a medical professional is essential.
  • If you do not have a private space and a stable internet connection for online sessions.

Yes, in most cases online therapy is an effective alternative to face-to-face therapy:

  • The additional distance can make it easier to open up about deeply personal issues.
  • Some people can find a direct eye-to-eye relationship intimidating.
  • There is greater anonymity (you are unlikely to run into your therapist while shopping, or at a social function).
  • For people with mobility challenges, and people in remotes areas, online therapy is more accessible.
  • There is a wider choice of practitioners.
For the majority of people, online therapy is an excellent option.

In some cases, in-person therapy is certainly preferable:

  • Online therapy is not suitable for crisis situations, or those with a serious or life-threatening mental health disorder.
  • It is also not suitable for those without a private space to use for sessions, and a stable Internet connection.

Currently, it is not possible to to use health insurance to pay for Helpspace sessions.

No. Your therapist will also not share any of your information with the NHS, unless you request them to do so.
