You can address any issue that is causing you difficulty in the context of a therapy session. The majority of therapists can deal with a wide range of issues. There are a number of issues that therapists require special training to address, and if you wish to discuss one of the following, it is important to select

a counsellor that specialises in that area. These are:

  • Adoption
  • Abuse
  • Addiction
  • Gender identity
  • Eating disorders
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
  • Trauma

The Helpspace questionnaire can guide you in filtering therapists that can address the above with you. Always check the therapist's profile to see if they are trained to cover these issues.

It's also fine to start therapy without having a definite issue, or issues, that you can articulate. It is not uncommon for people beginning this process to have feelings that lead them to start therapy, without being able to define their causes. A skilled therapist will almost certainly be trained to deal with clients that present as such.

Whatever issue you bring to therapy, your therapist is bound to protect your privacy. The only exception is if you share that you intend to hurt yourself or another person, or have committed a serious crime. In such a case, your therapist is legally obliged to contact the appropriate authorities. Admitting to personal use of illegal drugs is not considered reason to alert the authorities in the context of a therapy session.
