If you are experiencing difficulty in some area of your life, getting support through online therapy can assist you in creating meaningful change. It takes courage to take that important first step of seeking help.

But where and how does one begin looking for the right therapist? What makes one counsellor or type of therapy different from another? How can someone get a realistic idea of what to expect from working with a specific counsellor?

Typically, people seeking therapy are confronted with long lists of therapists on directories that use acronyms and jargon to describe what they do.

Psychological jargon is singularly unhelpful in assisting someone to find the right therapist. To the majority of people, it provides neither the guidance, nor the clarity that someone seeking help really deserves.

Helpspace makes every step of seeking online therapy easy and accessible to you, starting with finding the right therapist.

Find the right therapist or counsellor

Helpspace can guide you through the process of finding the right online therapist via our short online questionnaire, designed to match you with the practitioners that meet your needs.

The beauty of the Helpspace questionnaire is that it is not necessary for you to know the difference between a CBT therapist and a Person-Centered therapist in order to select a counsellor that works in the way you want to approach therapy. The questionnaire is jargon-free, and provided you know what you prefer, very helpful in filtering therapists that meet your requirements.

This questionnaire is completely private and anonymous. The therapists' profiles displayed in the results are based on your preferences.

Helpspace therapists go through a rigorous approval process before their profile is hosted on the platform, so that you can feel confident you are connecting with a verified professional. All Helpspace counsellors are required to be a member of a professional body that regulates therapists in the UK.

What happens when I take the Helpspace questionnaire?

Step 1: Answer the multiple choice questions

how online therapy works

The Helpspace questionnaire is designed to filter therapist profiles to find the right therapist for you. It consists of 7 short multiple choice questions.

This questionnaire is inspired by multiple studies on client preferences and on success factors in counselling and psychotherapy, including Mick Cooper and John Norcross.

The Helpspace questionnaire identifies which characteristics you are looking for in a therapist, and the way you wish to work in therapy.

Instead of searching an online directory of therapists without any guidance, the Helpspace questionnaire will direct you towards therapists who work in a way that suits your needs.

Step 2: View therapist profiles

Online therapist profiles

We will show you verified Helpspace therapists who match your preferences regarding whom you want to work with in therapy, and how you want to work.

Each therapist has a professional profile that you can view. You will find information about how that therapist can help you, and what to expect from having therapy with them.

You will also find information about that therapist's specialisations, fees and the types of sessions the therapist offers.

Step 3: Book an initial session

How helpspace works

Once you have found a therapist who suits you, you can book a one-off initial exploratory session with that therapist directly from their profile page.

An initial exploratory session is a session that all therapists offer to prospective clients. It is a no-commitment meeting during which the therapist can inform you about what to expect during therapy. It is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have and let the therapist know you are seeking therapy, if you feel ready.

This get-to-know-you session is a great way to find out if you connect well with your therapist - one of the most important factors in successful therapy.

As soon as you have found the right therapist, it is easy to book a regular Helpspace session.

Our mission

At Helpspace our mission is to enable you to connect easily with the online therapist of your choice that will give you the best chance of success.

How helpspace works

Research published in the International Journal of Clinical and Health Psychology (2015) has demonstrated that:

  • Therapy in which you and your therapist share the same preferences as to how counselling should progress result in significantly better outcomes.
  • Empowering a person to choose their own counsellor, based on their own preferences, makes a huge difference to the success of therapy.
  • The quality of the relationship you have with your therapist can strongly influence how successful therapy will be.
An important factor that distinguishes successful therapy from less successful therapy is the extent to which the client and therapist preferences about how to approach therapy are aligned.

With these factors in mind, Helpspace empowers you to choose your own therapist from those that are suited to your specific needs. You can take the Helpspace questionnaire here to get started straight away.
